The opera house La Scala Theatre in Milan or Teatro alla Scala, is one of the most important theatres in the world, every year the world's best theatre companies come to Milan to put on their shows - for many it is the highlight of their professional careers to have a performance at the La Scala Theatre in Milan.
The theatre is located not far from the Duomo in piazza Scala, and dates back to 1859/1860 - the original theatre was built in 1777/1778 by Giuseppe Piermarini on an area previously occupied by the church of Santa Maria alla Scala. The façade is Neoclassical, while the interior, that subsequently underwent various transformations, was partially rebuilt after the damage caused by bombing in 1943.
