Art and Museums - Sforzesco Castle http://www.antareshotels.com/en/milan_info/what_to_do/art_and_museums__sforzesco_castle/12.html The castle, which stands in the square of the same name, was built between 1358 and 1368, under Galeazzo II Visconti. In 1447 the government of the Ambrosian Republic decreed that it should be destroyed. Francesco Sforza ordered it to be rebuilt when he came to power. In 1521 the tower of Filarete blew up, causing an explosion of gunpowder. The castle suffered various adversities through the centuries. In 1880 the restoration work began under the direction of Luca Beltrami. The Filarete's Tower dominates the front of the castle. The lords of the castle normally resided in the Ducal Court, in a suite of richly frescoed and decorated halls.

Duomo and Churches - Certosa of Garegnano http://www.antareshotels.com/en/milan_info/what_to_do/duomo_and_churches__certosa_of_garegnano/5.html The Garegnano Carthusian monastery – just 200 mts far away from the Accademia Hotel - was founded in 1349 by Archbishop Giovanni Visconti. Little is left of the original 14th century building as it was completely rebuilt between the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century by Pellegrino Tibaldi. The walls of the nave are decorated with a fine series of frescoes by Daniele Crespi (1629) with episodes from the history of the Carthusian Order and its founder St. Brunone. On the right of the church there is a late sixteenth-century cloister.

It is an immense mountain of marble shaped into statues, pinnacles, buttresses, rampant arches and pillars. The highest pinnacle is topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary, known as La Madonnina.

Two immortal names, Leonardo da Vinci and Donato Bramante, have made this church eternally famous. The church stands in the square of the same name. It was built between 1466 and 1490 to plans by Guiniforte Solari, but a few years later Ludovico il Moro commissioned Bramante to redesign the apse, which has a splendid "tribune", a fine example of the Renaissance use of space. Bramante also designed the cloister and the old sacristy. Leonardo da Vinci's famous "Last Supper" is on one of the walls of the old Dominican monastery refectory. He began work on the fresco in 1495, and finished it in 1498. Duomo and Churches - The Basilica of S. Ambrogio http://www.antareshotels.com/en/milan_info/what_to_do/duomo_and_churches__the_basilica_of_s._ambrogio/3.html Saint Ambrose is Milan's patron saint - Construction of the basilica began in 379, and in 387 it was consecrated by St. Ambrose. Over the centuries the basilica has been modified, enlarged, damaged and even bombed, during the last World War.

Despite this it has retained its air of austerity and solemnity, and is still considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Lombardy. Inside there are monuments, works of art, and relics bearing witness to sixteen centuries of history.

Duomo and Churches - The Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Maggiore http://www.antareshotels.com/en/milan_info/what_to_do/duomo_and_churches__the_basilica_of_saint_lorenzo_maggiore/2.html The Basilica is an important example of Roman and early-Christian architecture. It is fronted by sixteen Corinthian columns from a 3rd century Roman temple and a courtyard with a bronze copy of the statue of Emperor Constantine in the centre. The basilica was built at the end of the 4th century, but through the years part of it collapsed. It was restored in 1911, 1916, and 1937-38, and can now be appreciated as a mainly early-Christian construction, with Romanesque and late fifteenth century additions.
