Brera Pinacotecs |
Via Brera, 28
At number 28, you will find the imposing
Palazzo di Brera. Begun in 1651 by Richini, commissioned
by the Jesuit Order, it originally housed the College,
Botanic Garden and Astronomical Observatory created
by the Order. After the suppression of the Jesuit
Company in 1773, empress Maria Teresa of Austria allocated
part of the building to the Fine Arts Academy, founded
in 1776. After having entered the monumental portal,
by Piermarini, you will see the bronze statue of Napoleon,
a work by Antonio Canova, at the centre of the court.
